History
Classification:
a. Schooner, Stephen Girard (1832-1844)
Nationality:
American (1832-1844)
Chronology:
1. 4/22/1839, Welland Canal (Gravelly Bay Lock), British soldiers attacked the vessel, forced the American flag to be cut down
and demanded that it be sent ashore; When the vessel tried to flee, the British closed the lock gate on the Stephen Girard smashing the small boat; This incident led to heated international dialect between the two countries;
Notes
General notes:
* This enrollment had the vessel name as "Stephen Jerard" which was an error;
**The tonnage gets changed from 78/95 to 75/95 which continues as an error;
***Length is given as 67', no inches; this mistake is also on the 1843 enrollment;
