Notes
General notes:
Peter Russell Papers, Vol. 1, p. 29: mentions a gun boat "Sophia" at Kingston in 1796;
This British sloop is confused with an American owned schooner bearing the same name. Records don't shed much
light on the sloop Sophia, but the American owned schooner was captured by the British and burned near Brockville, St. Lawrence River on 6/18/1812. The schooner was owned by Mathew McNair and her master was named Montgomery.
1/5/1798, she is reported as unserviceable by a Board of Survey held at Kingston, Ontario. Gun boat Sophia was to be
laid up in the manner usual for condemned vessels;
Macpherson list her built at Kingston, Ontario, 1792, as a gun boat; (this could not be confirmed);
