General notes:: Formerly Canadian "Canada"; Admitted by Act of Congress, 1/19/1859; First and last known document as Mississippi was on
1/27/1859; The vessel was being rebuilt at New York, N.Y. under the name "Mississippi" and was on the stocks when bought by the United States Navy on 8/ 23/1861; She was renamed "U.S.S. Connecticut"; She was re-named again on 10/11/1865 and was known as the "South America"; In 1875, she was removed from service and finally abandoned in 1879;
1857 her engines were removed and put in a new hull at Detroit by owner N. P. Stewart; 1858, hull was taken down St. Lawrence "rapids and sold; Hull was to go to California to run San Francisco to Frazer River; Upper works were removed and replaced at San Francisco; 1859 her guards were cut down to 3 feet and she was copper bottomed by 3/12/1859;
